Some of the items on this page may be marked "Requires Authorization". Why's this? Kiwi must verify the customer's medical history in order to ensure the medication is necessary and used according the direction of a licensed medical practitioner. If you have already demonstrated this, then you may be able to view this product. If not, please email us using the contact page. Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturer depending on the country of origin. Images are provided as a reference only, the received medicine may vary in packaging, color, pill shape, etc, from one batch to the next. For an item marked "generic" any quality brand may be sent, however you will always receive the active ingredients ordered in the strength(s) ordered.
Betahistine is the generic name for an anti-vertigo medication, used to treat vertigo, balance issues, severe dizziness, and tinnitus. Some patients also buy Betahistine to help with weight loss.
In the majority of cases vertigo, dizziness, and so forth are caused by increased pressure in the inner ear. Betahistine works by increasing vasodilation and permeability in the inner ear, at least in part by stimulating release of histamine, which reduces pressure in the ear and minimizes symptoms.
Betahistine will reduce the frequency and severity of symptoms, but it is not a cure. There is often no cure for the conditions which cause the symptoms, or there or only relatively invasive options, such as surgery. Patients buy Betahistine to manage symptoms until a cure can be attempted or to avoid the need for invasive procedures.
Conditions Treated
The medication can help end dizziness, vertigo, and tinnitus from nearly any cause. Patients routinely buy Betahistine to help manage:
Some patients buy Betahistine to help with weight loss, an off-label use. Some think the medication makes fatty foods unappealing, while others point out that while antihistamines promote weight gain, products that promote histamine production will result in weight loss. Either way, effects are most pronounced in patients who are obese and under age 50. Patients who are not obese and/or are over age 50 find that the medication may help prevent gaining additional weight, but it does little to help lose existing weight.
Taking Betahistine
Betahistine comes in tablets of three strengths: 8 mg, 16 mg, and 24 mg. Tablets should not be chewed, but can be split and swallowed. Splitting an 8 mg tablet will produce two 4 mg tablets, and so forth.
Treatment is very similar in all cases, including weight loss:
Because vertigo often produces nausea and other stomach upset, taking tablets with food and/or fluids is not always a realistic option at the start of treatment. Without food or fluids the medication may produce some mild stomach upset of its own, but this is usually indistinguishable from preexisting stomach upset.
Most patients notice improvements---fewer episodes, and milder episodes when they do occur---within a few days of starting treatment. It may take a few weeks for other patients. If there is no difference noticed after a month of treatment the medication is unlikely to provide benefit in the future; alternative treatments should be considered.
Treatment should continue for as long as doctor recommends. The medication can be used long-term, for a year or more.
Adverse Effects
Other than the very rare instance of allergic reaction to Betahistine, serious side effects are rare if taken as directed.
Patients who have a history of peptic ulcer or asthma should not buy Betahistine without first discussing risks and warning signs with a doctor. Those who have a rare adrenal gland tumor, a condition called pheochromocytoma, should not buy Betahistine at all.
There are three categories of other medications that should be avoided while taking Betahistine:
Betahistine's more common side effects are usually indistinguishable from the symptoms it treats; nausea, stomach upset, dizziness, and headache. If these become severe, or worsen considerably after Betahistine is taken, consult a doctor.
